Welcome back to 'Things I Like'. I think it's about time for another. Don't you?
Things I Like #4: Craft Beer
There are people who see everything as a means to an end. A computer is a way to get to The Facebook, and do school work; a phone is a way to make calls, and a smart-phone is a way to get email on the go; coffee is for staying awake; and beer is for getting drunk. We all know these people ... in fact, you may be one of them.
The purpose of this series is to show you that most things we do every day can be made a little more enjoyable by simply changing your perspective, and making some more enlightened decisions.
The world of beer is one that many people have not really explored. There are far too many people out there calling themselves 'beer drinkers', but they don't really have a clue. There are so many wonderful flavours to be experienced, but you'll have to put down the Coors/Bud.
The same as with anything else, you need to treat beer as an experience to get the most out of it. In Ontario we have 25 small breweries which have banded together, forming the 'Ontario Craft Brewers'. Each one of these small, Ontario-owned breweries has at least one beer you'll be interested in, even if you aren't feeling terribly adventurous.
In addition to the 25 'OCB' breweries, there are countless other even smaller micro-brews all over the province. In Uptown Waterloo, the Huether Hotel brews at least 10 different beers at any given time - there's something for everyone.
My point here is that even if you tend to drink 'Blue Light', 'Coors', 'Bud', and don't think you like flavour in your beer, there are literally hundreds of Ontario-brewed beers to try. I can guarantee that there is a beer you will enjoy more than the mass-produced garbage you may be drinking now (read: Keiths, Molson, Bud, Blue, most of Sleeman's beers, etc). The second advantage is that you're supporting Ontario-owned companies, as opposed to Japan (Sapporo), and the USA (the other breweries).
5 of my top beers (in no particular order)
Waterloo Dark (Brick Brewing Company)Cameron's Cream Ale
Flying Monkey (formerly Robert Simpson's Confederation Ale)
Black & Tan (Huether Hotel in Waterloo)
Special Pale Ale (Wellington Brewery, Guelph)
